Jana Brown met actor/director Perry King in 2011, and the two began a collaboration on a screenplay that has turned into an independent feature film called The Divide. The Western/drama was filmed in El Dorado County, Calif., in the summer of 2015. Post-production was completed at the end of 2017, and the film spent 2018 on the film festival circuit. The Divide made its world premiere at WorldFest-Houston on April 21, 2018, and was also an official selection of 15 other film festivals, including Albuquerque Film & Music Experience, Arizona International Film Festival, Bozeman International Film Festival, and La Femme Film Festival. It earned 26 awards and 38 nominations, including eight separate honors for best picture and best western and awards for acting, screenwriting, and cinematography.
Jana has earned a Best First Time Screenwriter Award from the Los Angeles Film Awards and a Silver Award for screenwriting from the International Independent Film Awards. At the LA Film Awards, The Divide was a finalist for Best Picture and also earned Best Western honors and honorable mentions for cinematography for Russ Rayburn and actress in a leading role for Sara Arrington. It also earned Best Picture and Best Actor (Perry King) honors from the 2019 Cowboys & Indians Movie Awards.
Set in drought-plagued Northern California in 1976, The Divide chronicles the story of Sam Kincaid, an aging rancher with a failing memory, his estranged and independent-minded daughter, Sarah, and Luke, a young ranch hand who finds himself in the midst of a family in crisis. Internal struggles, the realities of an unforgiving landscape, and the need to reconcile a long-ago tragedy collide to create the backdrop for this classic American Western.
The film represents a perfect combination of Jana's storytelling ability, which includes elements of truth from her own life experiences, and Perry's five decades of experience as a film and television actor, plus his passion for Westerns.
Random Media acquired worldwide distribution rights for the film. The film was released on January 21, 2020, on multiple streaming platforms, including Amazon and iTunes, and on Blu-Ray and DVD.
